Family Literacy

Family Literacy is about all members of a family learning together. Our Family Literacy program supports intergenerational literacy for children, youth, adults and frontline literacy workers.

Programs and Workshops

Read With Kids

Our Read with Kids  presentation is a free workshop for parents/caregivers on how to encourage reading with children. Books and resources are given to each adult and child.

This program is offered to organizations and community groups rather than individual families. We will come to your location and present to your families.

We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of Decoda Literacy, the Government of BC, and the Postmedia Raise-a-Reader campaign.

StoryWalk® Kits

A StoryWalk® is an innovative way to enjoy reading and the outdoors—pages of a book are placed along a walking route, inviting families and others to experience the story one page at a time while enjoying a stroll in nature.

READ has created StoryWalk® Kits that organizations and community groups can borrow for free. The kits are not available for individual lending, but are designed for use by community groups, schools, and other organizations. The kits contain everything you need to set up your own walking and reading adventure.

Introduction to Family Literacy

In partnership with Surrey Libraries and Surrey Schools, READ offers a free 12-hour workshop that teaches frontline literacy workers how to incorporate family literacy into their work.

Racing Readers

READ has partnered with Surrey Schools, Simon Fraser University and University of BC to present the Racing Readers program. This program offers a series of after-school sessions that help children develop literacy, numeracy, physical skills, and social well-being. Children participate in reading, writing and numeracy exercises and physical literacy. University and high school student volunteers offer support and guidance for the program participants.

Racing Readers is offered through selected elementary schools in SD36.
